Calgee Vegan Omega-3 Review: First Impressions
Fish oil has long been heralded as a miracle supplement, with benefits ranging from improved heart health to better brain function. But considering that fish oil is just, well, oil from fish, it’s not exactly the most sustainable or environmentally friendly product out there.
So when I heard about Calgee and its mission to ‘create the world’s most sustainable and high-quality health supplements’, I was immediately interested.
I’m not someone who puts any old supplement into my body – I want to know that what I’m taking is safe, effective, and not damaging the planet. So I was happy to see that all of Calgee focuses on these three core pillars.
So, first impressions? The packaging is sleek and stylish, and the website is well-designed and easy to navigate. There’s a real focus on sustainability here, which is great to see.
The product itself is a vegan omega-3 supplement made from algae oil. Each bottle contains 60 capsules, each providing 450mg of omega-3 fatty acids per serving.
So far, so good. But how does it actually work?
How Does Calgee Vegan Omega-3 Work?
Calgee Omega-3 works in much the same way as any other omega-3 supplement on the market. The active ingredient is EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), both of which are essential fatty acids that our bodies can’t produce on their own.
These fatty acids are important for a whole host of reasons, including heart health, brain function, and even joint health. By supplementing with Calgee Omega-3, you’re able to ensure that your body is getting the EPA and DHA it needs to function at its best.
Of course, the big selling point here is that Calgee Omega-3 is vegan. So how does it compare to fish oil?
Well, the short answer is that it’s just as effective. Algae is the original source from which fish get their omega-3, so you’re getting the same benefits here, while cutting out the ‘middle fish’.
The long answer is a little more complicated. While algae-based omega-3 is just as effective as fish oil, the quality can vary depending on the source and manufacturing process.
For example, some algae supplements on the market use low-quality oils that have been heavily processed. This can reduce the overall efficacy of the product, as well as introduce potential toxins and impurities.
Calgee, on the other hand, uses a high-quality, potent form of algae oil, with each batch lab-tested for purity and potency. This ensures you get a quality, effective, and safe product.
The verdict? Calgee Vegan Omega-3 is a good product, but it’s not without its flaws.
The Pros
There are a few things I like about Calgee Vegan Omega-3. First of all, I appreciate the focus on sustainability and environmental friendliness. It’s rare to find a supplement company that actually cares about these things, and it’s something I can definitely get behind.
I also like the fact that the product is made from high-quality, non-GMO microalgae in a controlled indoor environment. This ensures that the final product is of the highest possible quality and free from harmful toxins or impurities.
The capsules being carrageenan-free is another big plus in my book. Carrageenan is a common food additive linked to gastrointestinal problems [1], so it’s great to see a company avoiding it altogether.
Finally, I appreciate the fact that Calgee offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. This shows they’re confident in their product and willing to stand behind it. If unsatisfied with the results, you can always get your money back- no questions asked.
The Cons
There are a few things I don’t like about Calgee Vegan Omega-3. First of all, it’s the dose of EPA and DHA. Each serving only contains 450mg, which is on the low end of the spectrum. Alternative products in a similar price bracket offer over double this amount, so you can get a better bang for your buck elsewhere.
I would prefer to see a higher dose, especially considering the price point. At $28 for a bottle of 60 capsules, there are certainly cheaper options out there. That said, they have a ‘subscribe and save’ option, which brings the price down a bit. And you can’t put a price on your health, so I suppose it’s ultimately up to the individual.
Another thing I don’t like is the fact that the capsules contain unnecessary ingredients, including high oleic sunflower and rosemary oil. These ingredients serve no real purpose and only serve to bulk up the capsule, which is frustrating.
Finally, this isn’t so much an issue for me, but you can only buy Calgee Vegan Omega-3 online. So if you’re someone who prefers to do their shopping in person, you’re out of luck.
The Bottom Line: Calgee Vegan Omega-3 Review
Whether you’re vegan or not, Calgee Vegan Omega-3 is a quality product that offers many health benefits. The main selling point is that it’s environmentally friendly and sustainable, but it also delivers on efficacy.
The downsides are the relatively low dose of EPA and DHA, as well as the inclusion of unnecessary ingredients. And at $28 for a bottle of 60 capsules, it’s not the cheapest option on the market.
There’s a lot to like about Calgee Vegan Omega-3. It ticks all the boxes in terms of quality and sustainability, and it comes with a money-back guarantee. This is worth considering if you’re looking for a quality vegan omega-3 supplement.
I’d recommend it if:
- You’re vegan or vegetarian
- You’re looking for a sustainable and environmentally friendly option
- You want a quality product that’s backed by a money-back guarantee
I wouldn’t recommend it if:
- You’re looking for the cheapest option on the market
- You want the highest dose of omega-3 possible
- You want to avoid unnecessary ingredients
I require a higher dose of omega-3 than what Calgee Vegan Omega-3 offers. So I’m not prepared to switch from my preferred supplement – Performance Lab Omega-3 – at least not yet! If you’d like to learn more about it, check out my in-depth review here.
